My Work
With my work I create pieces that have a lot of texture and are inspired by nature. The goals I have with my work is to incorporate things around me everyday into my art. For my work in the future I want to make pieces that are mostly functional and thrown on the wheel.
When I create my pieces I make most of my decision making by thinking about things around me and see how they can inspire me to make a new piece. I usually research online and I look for interesting and something that catches my eye and move on from there. I write most of my ideas and sketches in my sketchbook. I really try to bring what I drew into what I end up making in the end with the clay, trying to transform just an idea to something that I made. Techniques that I use are throwing on the wheel, slipping and scoring pieces of clay together, and also coiling. My favorite out of all of them is
mainly throwing on the wheel because each of the steps are totally different. You can go from
throwing just a ball of clay to trimming an almost finished piece.
With my current work it looks very neutral especially since I used brown colors and tones in
most of my work. For my owls on the right, you can see how I used the brown color tone, and added that
pop of color to really make the piece unique and different. I try to incorporate a lot of different textures that
really make the piece nice to look at and also nice to hold and feel. My work has definitely grown along the years,
and can clearly show what path I want to take with my work. I want the viewer to feel a sense of nature that can be shown
through my work. Things that I've attempted to do is bring my color choices along a different route compared to the bright and
vibrant colors I used last year. I really found a happy medium between the two and try to make smarter decisions when it comes to
choosing a glaze color.
